    Examination of forest products trade between Turkey and European Union countries with gravity model approach

    The success of getting in the foreign trade forms one of the basic stones of economic development for countries. The current and potential trading volume among countries and determining the main factors affecting trade are quite important. The trade currents of the European Union (EU) countries and Turkey in the forest products industry field were analyzed by the gravity model in this study. For this reason, the panel data method was used for 2000 - 2006 periods. The results show the existence of a high degree of trade integration between Turkey and EU. The estimated gravity models explained 63% of the variation regarding the volume of bilateral trade flows in the EU and Turkey. Furthermore, it was determined that GDP had a positive effect on the amount of foreign trade while distance had a negativeeffect; and Turkey has lower trading volume with the EU countries than its potential regarding the forest products industry field

    Cell organization in soft media due to active mechanosensing

    Adhering cells actively probe the mechanical properties of their environment and use the resulting information to position and orient themselves. We show that a large body of experimental observations can be consistently explained from one unifying principle, namely that cells strengthen contacts and cytoskeleton in the direction of large effective stiffness. Using linear elasticity theory to model the extracellular environment, we calculate optimal cell organization for several situations of interest and find excellent agreement with experiments for fibroblasts, both on elastic substrates and in collagen gels: cells orient in the direction of external tensile strain, they orient parallel and normal to free and clamped surfaces, respectively, and they interact elastically to form strings. Our method can be applied for rational design of tissue equivalents. Moreover our results indicate that the concept of contact guidance has to be reevaluated. We also suggest that cell-matrix contacts are upregulated by large effective stiffness in the environment because in this way, build-up of force is more efficient.Comment: Revtex, 7 pages, 4 Postscript files include

    Absence of Scaling in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect

    We have studied the conductivity peak in the transition region between the two lowest integer Quantum Hall states using transmission measurements of edge magnetoplasmons. The width of the transition region is found to increase linearly with frequency but remains finite when extrapolated to zero frequency and temperature. Contrary to prevalent theoretical pictures, our data does not show the scaling characteristics of critical phenomena.These results suggest that a different mechanism governs the transition in our experiment.Comment: Minor changes and new references include

    On Automated Lemma Generation for Separation Logic with Inductive Definitions

    Separation Logic with inductive definitions is a well-known approach for deductive verification of programs that manipulate dynamic data structures. Deciding verification conditions in this context is usually based on user-provided lemmas relating the inductive definitions. We propose a novel approach for generating these lemmas automatically which is based on simple syntactic criteria and deterministic strategies for applying them. Our approach focuses on iterative programs, although it can be applied to recursive programs as well, and specifications that describe not only the shape of the data structures, but also their content or their size. Empirically, we find that our approach is powerful enough to deal with sophisticated benchmarks, e.g., iterative procedures for searching, inserting, or deleting elements in sorted lists, binary search tress, red-black trees, and AVL trees, in a very efficient way

    Localization of alkaline phosphatase in bacillus intermedium Cells

    Alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme secreted by Bacillus intermedius S3-19 cells to the medium, was also detected in the cell wall, membrane, and cytoplasm. The relative content of alkaline phosphatase in these cell compartments depended on the culture age and cultivation medium. The vegetative growth of B. intermedius on 0.3% lactate was characterized by increased activity of extracellular and membrane-bound phosphatases. The increase in lactate concentration to 3% did not affect the activity of membrane-bound phosphatase but led to a decrease in the activity of the extracellular enzyme. Na2UPO4 at a concentration of 0.01% diminished the activity of membrane-bound and extracellular phosphatases. CoCl2 at a concentration of 0.1 mM released membrane-bound phosphatase into the medium. By the onset of sporulation, phosphatase was predominantly localized in the medium and in the cell wall. As is evident from zymograms, the multiple molecular, forms of phosphatase varied depending on its cellular localization and growth phase

    Absorption shifts of diastereotopically ligated chlorophyll dimers of photosystem I

    The light-harvesting chlorophyll (Chl) molecules of photosynthetic systems form the basis for light-driven energy conversion. In biological environments, the Chl chromophores occur in two distinct diastereotopic configurations, where the alpha and beta configurations have a magnesium-ligating histidine residue and a 17-propionic acid moiety on the opposite side or on the same side of the Chl ring, respectively. Although beta-ligated Chl dimers occupy conserved positions around the reaction center of photosystem I (PSI), the functional relevance of the alpha/beta configuration of the ligation is poorly understood. We employ here correlated ab initio calculations using the algebraic-diagrammatic construction through second order (ADC(2)) and the approximate second-order coupled cluster (CC2) methods in combination with the reduced virtual space (RVS) approach in studies of the intrinsic excited-state properties of alpha-ligated and beta-ligated Chl dimers of PSI. Our ab initio calculations suggest that the absorption of the alpha-ligated reaction-center Chl dimer of PSI is redshifted by 0.13-0.14 eV in comparison to the beta-ligated dimers due to combined excitonic coupling and strain effects. We also show that time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations using range-separated density functionals underestimate the absorption shift between the alpha- and beta-ligated dimers. Our findings may provide a molecular starting point for understanding the energy flow in natural photosynthetic systems, as well as a blueprint for developing new molecules that convert sunlight into other forms of energy.Peer reviewe

    GTI-space : the space of generalized topological indices

    A new extension of the generalized topological indices (GTI) approach is carried out torepresent 'simple' and 'composite' topological indices (TIs) in an unified way. Thisapproach defines a GTI-space from which both simple and composite TIs represent particular subspaces. Accordingly, simple TIs such as Wiener, Balaban, Zagreb, Harary and Randićconnectivity indices are expressed by means of the same GTI representation introduced for composite TIs such as hyper-Wiener, molecular topological index (MTI), Gutman index andreverse MTI. Using GTI-space approach we easily identify mathematical relations between some composite and simple indices, such as the relationship between hyper-Wiener and Wiener index and the relation between MTI and first Zagreb index. The relation of the GTI space with the sub-structural cluster expansion of property/activity is also analysed and some routes for the applications of this approach to QSPR/QSAR are also given

    Sparse Kneser graphs are Hamiltonian

    For integers k≥1 and n≥2k+1, the Kneser graph K(n,k) is the graph whose vertices are the k-element subsets of {1,…,n} and whose edges connect pairs of subsets that are disjoint. The Kneser graphs of the form K(2k+1,k) are also known as the odd graphs. We settle an old problem due to Meredith, Lloyd, and Biggs from the 1970s, proving that for every k≥3, the odd graph K(2k+1,k) has a Hamilton cycle. This and a known conditional result due to Johnson imply that all Kneser graphs of the form K(2k+2a,k) with k≥3 and a≥0 have a Hamilton cycle. We also prove that K(2k+1,k) has at least 22k−6 distinct Hamilton cycles for k≥6. Our proofs are based on a reduction of the Hamiltonicity problem in the odd graph to the problem of finding a spanning tree in a suitably defined hypergraph on Dyck words
